The extensive use of acronyms and jargon in the fibre industry has been highlighted by a company that has produced a handy guide for those new to the field.

Fiberone manufactures fibre optic network solutions for communication network providers. Specialising  in high-quality fibre optic products used in FTTx, CATV, and data centres, the company provides standard and custom fibre optic solutions, from fibre patch cords to patch panels.

Prolabs appoints head of technology

ProLabs, a provider of global optical network infrastructure products, has appointed Giacomo Losio as head of technology to the company.

Losio joins ProLabs from Cisco Systems, where he recently held the position of lead optical design engineer for its transceiver module Group.

Business group gives broadband warning

The UK government should adopt much more ambitious targets for rolling out high-speed broadband for firms across the UK, according to a business group.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says that, with an estimated 45,000 firms still on dial-up – and many more struggling with speeds lower than two megabits per second (Mbps) – it is clear that while the residential market may be seeing the benefits of high speed broadband, this is often not the case for the business community.

Organisers and delegates at Next Generation Optical Networking 2014 in the French city of Nice have declared the event 'a grand success'.

More than 600 delegates – considerably more than at last year's event – made their way to the Acropolis convention and exhibition centre in the heart of the city. Ciena chosen by TeliaSonera International Carrier

Angola Cables hails DE-CIX agreement

Angola Cables has announced a strategic partnership with DE-CIX, the German internet exchange operator headquartered in Frankfurt am Main.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes a long-term collaboration and creates the foundations of what the companies call a 'new neutral interconnection environment in the Republic of Angola'.

FTTH Council conference heads to Warsaw

The FTTH Council Europe has confirmed that the 12th edition of the FTTH Conference 2015 will be held in Warsaw’s international exhibition centre, EXPO XXI, from 10 to 12 February 2015. The theme of the 2015 Warsaw event is ‘Creating a Connected Continent’.

'The event timing is perfect for Poland since the country is widely implementing its broadband infrastructure,' said Karin Ahl, president of the FTTH Council Europe.

Xtera to provide Guantanamo fibre link

Xtera Communications, a provider of submarine optical networking cable systems, announced today the award of a contract by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), an agency of the US Department of Defense, to build a new undersea fibre optic cable system connecting the Guantanamo Bay military base with southern Florida.
 
The cable system is approximately 1,500 km long and will enable connectivity to the Defense Information System Network (DISN) via fibre optic technology.
