Telefónica to shut down a copper switchboard a day until 2020

Telefónica Spain has developed a new scheme allowing it to transform its network by shutting down a copper switchboard a day until 2020. The Faro Project is designed to enable the shutdown of 653 copper switchboards by 2020, 253 of which will occur this year, 200 in 2019, and 200 more in 2020.

The company says that, under the project framework, it will be able to make savings when it comes to energy and space, citing the space occupation of fibre at 15 per cent in comparison to copper and potential energy savings of up to 60 per cent.

CityFibre to proceed with judicial review over ASA ‘fibre’ decision

The High Court has granted CityFibre permission to proceed with its judicial review of the UK Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) decision on how the term ‘fibre’ is used in broadband advertising. The ASA now has 35 days to prepare a counter case, and the full judicial review is expected to be heard later this summer.

New starter, DustPhotonics has announced the volume availability of its QSFP28-SR4 optical transceivers

The company was formally founded in March of this year with the aim of addressing the rising demand for greater bandwidth at lower cost in cloud, datacenters, HPC and enterprise networks.  With headquarters in Modi'in, Israel, and offices in Cupertino, California, DustPhotonics is led by chief executive officer Ben Rubovitch, chief technology officer Kobi Hasharoni, and vice president of engineering Amir Geron.

MLL Telecom teams up with CityFibre to bring FibreConnect gigabit boost to Sterling

MLL Telecom has partnered with CityFibre to offer businesses in Stirling a gigabit boost, providing next-generation internet services over a new, purpose built full fibre network.

The new commercial sector offering from MLL Telecom – FibreConnect – is being rolled out to give local businesses the chance to benefit from dedicated full fibre broadband capable of gigabit speeds. CityFibre, has already installed 24km of network, which connects most of Stirling city’s public sector estate including schools, libraries and community venues.

Fibre and cable now service 77 per cent of global subscriptions, says Point Topic

Fibre and cable technologies are now servicing 77 per cent of fixed subscriptions, the latest figures released from Point Topic have revealed.

The new report, which cites the Global Broadband Statistics – taking into account subscriptions up to the end of 2017 – found that more than 50 per cent of people in more than 40 countries, including Singapore (97 per cent), China (89 per cent), United States (87 per cent), and the UK (55 per cent), are connected via full fibre, fibre fed copper or cable.

Dell'Oro Group: 142 per cent revenue rise for WDM systems ‘the start of a good thing’

The market for disaggregated WDM systems is growing, according to a recent report by market information firm, Dell'Oro Group.

The Optical Transport Quarterly Report covers manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, unit shipments (by speed including 40Gb/s, 100Gb/s, 200 Gb/s, and 400 Gb/s).  It tracks DWDM long haul terrestrial, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers (SONET/SDH), optical switch, optical packet platforms, and data centre interconnect (metro and long haul).

Optical hardware spend up in Europe, Asia Pacific, down in North America, says Cignal AI

Cignal AI has published its Optical Hardware Report for the first quarter of 2018. Key findings include a noted growth in optical hardware sales in the Asia Pacific region – fuelled by additional increases in spending outside of China – and sales growth in the EMEA region also year-on-year. The report did highlight a spend decline in the North American market, which it said proved weaker than expected.
