Nokia has joined the Bristol Is Open initiative, becoming the first major telecoms vendor to participate in Bristol's unique living laboratory.

Bristol Is Open (BIO) encompasses the entire city, effectively transforming it into a dynamic test bed to explore how integrated technology can benefit citizens – from helping solve problems such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and assisted living for the elderly to trials of self-driving cars.

Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN) and Nokia Bell Labs have achieved what they claim is a record transmission capacity of 65Tb/s over 6,600km of singlemode fibre.

An interesting point of comparison: the capacity of 65Tb/s is 13,000 times greater than the capacity that was available on the first undersea amplified transatlantic system installed in 1995.

ECOC 2016 - Ixia and Viavi Solutions joined forces to show what they claim is the world’s first public interoperability demonstration of a test system running bi-directional 400 Gigabit Ethernet line rate traffic with RS-544 forward error correction (FEC) as currently defined in the IEEE 802.3bs draft standard.

Lumentum and Finisar took part in what they claim is the industry's first interoperability demonstration of 100G SWDM4 optical transceivers at ECOC 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany, this week.

A live data link ran between the Lumentum and Finisar booths with SWDM4 optical transceivers from the two manufacturers exchanging data via a traditional duplex multimode optical fibre. The QSFP28 modules are plugged into test systems provided by Anritsu and Viavi, recording error-free transmission, thus demonstrating the transceivers' ability to communicate with each other.

Infinera has unveiled the Xceed Software Suite, a portfolio of modular software components that can automate service provisioning in Infinera-based optical transport networks.

The suite comes in two main parts. The Xceed Multi-layer SDN Platform provides software-defined networking-based automation of control plane functions. The Xceed Applications are a set of starter ‘apps’ that enable service providers to immediately start using the new software to activate bandwidth and reconfigure network resources.

On August 17 at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel announced that its silicon photonics platform is now in volume production and shipping in the form of 100G optical transceivers.

The announcement highlights the maturity of this technology, as demonstrated by the commercial availability of the first products, the company asserts.

Optical access vendor Adtran announced the development of what it calls Subscriber Edge Tunable (SET) transceivers for next-generation passive optical networks at its annual analyst event held this week in its Huntsville, Alabama headquarters.
