Ciena’s GeoMesh chosen to enhance submarine networks in Caucasus and Latin America

Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme open network architecture with high-density 100G transponders has been selected to enhance two submarine networks in the Caucasus and Latin America regions.

As sole owner of the Black Sea submarine cable, Caucasus Online provides critical services in regional communications, acting as a major gateway for internet traffic from Europe to South Caucasus and the Caspian region.

The company chose to collaborate with Ciena and partner and partner company NUTS:iX in order to increase the speed and capacity of data transfers, as Giorgi Shanidze, CEO, Caucasus Online said: ‘As we assessed the future of cable infrastructure installed across the Black Sea, it was clear we needed a turn-key solution to address concerns with low data transfer capacity and our existing 100G network assets.’ The network management system allows the company to manage inventory management and wavelength provisioning that span across access, metro, and core domains, with visibility through protocol layers such as WDM, OTN and packet services.

Meanwhile, in Latin America, wholesale telecommunications firm GlobeNet implemented the architecture to deliver 200G wavelengths along its 23,500km fibre optic subsea cable system. The deployment of the system – which includes the 6500 packet-optical platform powered by WaveLogic Ai coherent optics – will help to improve network resiliency, increase system capacity, and reduce latency. Eduardo Falzoni, CEO, GlobeNet explained: ‘We pride ourselves on our ability to offer customers a variety of capabilities, from carrier Ethernet services to managed colocation environments and network virtualization. Our investment in Ciena’s network solutions highlights our commitment to providing customers with secure and reliable data services, even in the face of the unpredictable.’

Earlier this year, Sweden’s Eastern Light – which is building a series of new, international, submarine fibre-optic cable routes in northern Europe – also selected GeoMesh to help meet the fast-growing demand for long-haul dark fibre in the region (see Eastern Light deploys Ciena GeoMesh in Northern Europe).
