GBI selects Ciena to upgrade connections to the Middle East

Gulf Bridge International (GBI), a service provider that operates an integrated network connecting the world to the Middle East, has signed an agreement with Ciena to upgrade its submarine and terrestrial networks.

GBI will deploy Ciena's 6500 packet-optical platform to enhance network flexibility and scalability, boosting capacity through the use of 100G and 200G coherent wavelengths.

FTTH Council Europe director general departs

The FTTH Council Europe has announced that its director general Hartwig Tauber has decided to step down from his position, effective 30 November.

After more than ten years’ service to the organisation, Tauber says he is moving on for personal reasons. The Board of Directors of the FTTH Council Europe will assess its next move over the coming weeks.

Chunghwa Telecom commences commercial G.fast deployment

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest service provider, has collaborated with Alcatel-Lucent on what they claim is the world’s first commercial deployment of G.fast access technology.

G.fast uses an architecture called fibre-to-the-distribution-point (FTTdp) to provide ultra-high speeds – which Alcatel-Lucent dubs ‘ultra broadband’ – over short copper tails, allowing operators to take advantage of existing infrastructure for customer connections.

Optical components company Finisar has announced that its board of directors has accepted the resignation of chief executive officer and director Eitan Gertel. No reason was given for his departure.

Jerry Rawls, the company's executive chairman and principal executive, will assume the title of chief executive officer, a position he previously held from 1999 to 2008.

LightCounting: Web 2.0 spending will offset service provider capex decline

An increase in spending by Web 2.0 companies will help to counteract the decline in service provider capital expenditure, according to market research firm LightCounting in its “August 2015 Market Forecast and Database”.

The 15 web content companies in LightCounting’s Internet Index collectively spent $19 billion on servers, network equipment, and other property and equipment in the first six months of 2015 – up 16 per cent from the same period last year.

Thorlabs acquires Vytran from NKT Photonics

Photonics products manufacturer Thorlabs has announced plans to acquire Vytran from Denmark-based NKT Photonics. The sale, which Thorlabs’ anticipates will improve its product offerings to the photonics market, is expected to close in September 2015.

Headquartered in New Jersey, United States, Vytran makes high performance products to taper and fuse optical fibre. The company’s fibre processing technologies are used in a broad range of precision applications including telecommunications, medical components, fibre lasers, and sensing systems.

EXFO names Ciena veteran Philippe Morin as COO

Cardiff cluster to commercialise compound semiconductor research

Cardiff University has signed a deal with semiconductor wafer supplier IQE to establish a centre for compound semiconductor excellence in Wales.

The for-profit venture – the first of its kind in the UK – will seek to develop an expertise ‘cluster’ in the development and commercialisation of compound semiconductor technologies.
