Nextrom launches OFC 35SF specialty fibre proof test system

The OFC 35SF from Nextrom is an axial tension proof testing system designed to test the strength of speciality optical fibres in accordance with international standards.

Developed from the test system for standard diameter fibres, the specialty fibre test system incorporates extended tension ranges for tensile testing and large diameter integrated bending wheels to test fibre strength in eight directions. This provides a highly accurate test system where the resolution is maintained by using multiple tension gauges for different test ranges.

During proof testing, the fibre is paid out, loaded between two capstans for testing with a specific force, and then taken up with a dancer. To meet the requirements of specialty fibres, special attention has been paid to the quality of the take-ups and pay-offs, as well as the flexibility and ease of configuration. High performance is reached by efficient servo motors, high-accuracy tension sensors, and a specially designed dancer that guarantees effective winding at high speeds.

The OFC 35SF operates at a speed of 300m/min, with a tensile pulling force (machine) from 5 to 50N. Optional extended ranges using additional tension gauges and fibre pulleys provide tensile pulling force of 0.8–5.0N to accommodate smaller diameter fibres.

When designing the OFC 35SF, Nextrom focused on ergonomics to make sure the machine is both safe and comfortable to use. The threading mode and fibre clamp of the take-up are easy to set up. The operator then only needs to change full reels in the pay-off and empty reels in the take-up. A cutting plan can be keyed in to the unit so that it stops when the desired length is reached.
