JPIX deploys XKL DWDM technology for 400G internet exchange upgrade

Japan Internet Xing (JPIX), one of Japan's leading internet exchange providers, has selected XKL's dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology to expand its core 400G network infrastructure.

The deployment is designed to enhance network reliability and scalability for JPIX's peering services, which connect major ISPs, cable TV operators, content providers, and cloud platforms across the Asia-Pacific region.

Layer 1 redundancy prioritises disaster resilience

JPIX cited equipment stability and native resilience as primary factors in selecting XKL's DWDM platform. The platform's carrier-grade hardware and physical layer (Layer 1) redundancy are designed to provide failover capability during natural disasters, while simultaneously supporting increased traffic demands from global hyperscalers.

"In recent years, we have strongly felt the growing demand for connectivity from global AI hyperscalers," said Takejiro Takabayashi, deputy director of JPIX's IX engineering department. "Our secure and flexible Layer 1 network serves as a critical foundation that positions JPIX as a highly reliable peering gateway across the Asia-Pacific region."

Takabayashi highlighted XKL's equipment operability and maintainability following rigorous testing, as well as the vendor's responsiveness to custom requirements.

Direct OEM engagement accelerates deployment

JPIX noted that working directly with XKL as an OEM, rather than through a distributor, enabled faster implementation of equipment modifications based on operational feedback, an uncommon arrangement in the Japanese market.

"XKL's support system is exceptional, consistently providing prompt and accurate responses to technical inquiries and operational assistance," Takabayashi said. Crucially for future-proofing, JPIX expects the platform to support a seamless migration to 800G and 1.6T bandwidth requirements.

Casey Inman, head of sales and marketing at XKL, said the Redmond, Washington-based vendor's approach prioritises customer collaboration on deployment timelines and design challenges. "Network operators don't have time for red tape. They want clarity, speed, and results," he said.

Scaling for hyperscaler and AI demand

The infrastructure upgrade positions JPIX to handle growing peering traffic as international business expands across Asia. The internet exchange operator said the scalable network architecture provides a foundation for meeting evolving connectivity requirements, particularly from high-demand sectors such as AI and cloud services, whilst maintaining service reliability standards.
