Zayo Europe has partnered with Spanish dark fibre operator Reintel to deploy 400GE-enabled wavelength services across the Iberian Peninsula. The move marks Zayo’s official entry into Portugal and a significant network expansion across additional Spanish metropolitan areas.
The collaboration provides carriers and enterprises in the region with access to Zayo Europe’s pan-European network, which connects over 600 data centres. The deployment spans more than 3,500km of fibre infrastructure, linking key strategic hubs including Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Sines.
Low-latency routes connect major business hubs
The network extension delivers direct data centre-to-data centre connectivity while strengthening international links to Mediterranean and Atlantic subsea networks. Alongside high-capacity wavelengths, Zayo Europe is also expanding its Tier-1 IP services into Portugal and increasing its footprint in Spanish cities.
"Spain and Portugal are quickly emerging as major data centre hubs, with a strong supply of renewable energy driving new investments to power AI and other cutting-edge technologies," said Colman Deegan, chief executive of Zayo Europe. "We are delighted to partner with Reintel, who operate high-quality, mission-critical fibre infrastructure in the region."
The deployment follows Zayo Europe’s recent expansion into the German market. It positions Iberia as a strategic link in the operator's footprint, designed to support data-intensive workloads and low-latency requirements for cloud adoption.
Renewable energy attracts data centre investment
Francisco J. Blanca Patón, chief executive of Reintel, said combining the company’s dark fibre footprint with Zayo’s international network creates significant opportunities. "This partnership will empower data centres and businesses across Spain and Portugal to keep pace with rising data demands and ultimately strengthen Europe’s digital backbone," he said.
The timing aligns with a surge in data centre development planned across Iberia during 2026. This growth is largely driven by the availability of renewable energy and the need for massive computing capacity to support artificial intelligence. The 400GE capability provides the necessary headroom as these operators scale their infrastructure.
By leveraging Reintel’s regional assets, Zayo Europe can deliver managed wavelength and IP services without requiring direct infrastructure investment across all routes. This model allows for rapid market entry while maintaining the service quality and performance characteristics required by modern hyperscale customers.
