nexfibre set to deliver full-fibre broadband to 30,000 premises in Sedgefield this year

Fibre rollout

nexfibre’s network is set to reach over 30,000 premises across Sedgefield in 2024, which will provide access to Virgin Media O2’s services. The investment is part of the business’ wider plan to add over 40,000 premises across Durham in 2024, in partnership with its build partner and anchor tenant, Virgin Media O2.

The investment in areas of Newton Aycliffe including, Trimdon, Trimdon Grange, Fishburn, Sedgefield, Chilton, Ferryhill and Cornforth highlights the commitment nexfibre continues to make in deploying its next-generation full-fibre network to communities across the UK. The company recently announced it has reached 1 million premises, part of its overall goal of reaching 5 million premises by 2026.

nexfibre’s full-fibre broadband is powered by the latest XGS-PON technology, capable of symmetrical speeds of up to 10 Gbps. More customers than ever in Sedgefield – and the wider Durham area will be able to high-speed broadband and TV Stream services via Virgin Media O2.

Rajiv Datta, CEO of nexfibre, said: “We are committed to delivering high quality full-fibre connectivity to communities and business across the UK, including in Sedgefield and the wider county of Durham. By boosting access to broadband, we are enabling access to the tools needed to participate and thrive in a modern, digital society and stoking growth in the local economy.”

Paul Howell, Member of Parliament for Sedgefield, said: “The investment nexfibre is making in Newton Aycliffe, Trimdon, Trimdon Grange, Fishburn, Sedgefield, Chilton, Ferryhill, and Cornforth will create jobs, drive economic growth and help provide better services for people locally. This Conservative government has made boosting access to fibre broadband a priority and we are delivering that for local people and communities here in the North East and across the country. I welcome the work nexfibre is doing to increase access to quality broadband and provide the national scale competition that will drive the innovation and progress the UK needs in the fibre market.

Julie Agnew, Managing Director of Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2 said: “More than 30,000 homes and businesses in Sedgefield constituency will soon be able to feel the benefit of Virgin Media’s services - with packages that include everything from next generation gigabit broadband to easy-to-use TV streaming and entertainment services.

“These ultrareliable full fibre to the home broadband connections come with speeds up to 10 times faster than local average – providing local people with total peace of mind that whatever they’re doing online, their connection won’t slow them down,” Agnew continued. “nexfibre is a critical enabler of the government’s ambitions to close the digital divide and deliver a nationwide ultrafast broadband rollout by 2030. As a wholesale-only provider, it is committed to build and maintain a quality full-fibre infrastructure platform. This enables them to deliver more choice, more competition and provide people, communities and organisations with quality connectivity.”
