AFL has introduced the OptiNID MAX Optical Demarcation Enclosure, debuting at Fiber Connect 2026. The compact, flexible solution is designed to help service providers meet the accelerating fibre demands of multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environments.
In addition, it aims to provide a single platform that fits a wide range of installation scenarios, the OPN MAX supports up to 12 SC simplex or LC duplex adapters and 24 single-fibre splices. The enclosure is optimised for use with AFL FASTConnect Mechanical
Connectors and FUSEConnect field-installable connectors. It features integrated fibre routing, cable retention, and optional accessories that streamline installation from the truck to the wall.
The OPN MAX also supports single-fibre deployment configurations and integrated slack-storage applications, giving service providers greater flexibility to manage fibre efficiently and scale across a wide range of network architectures, including those aligned with BEAD-funded buildouts.
Bridging the gap in AFL's portfolio
Speaking exclusively to Fibre Systems at Fiber Connect 2026, Ara Zadoorian, product line manager at AFL, explained that the OptiNID MAX fills a critical gap in AFL's product portfolio between smaller single-family units and larger MDU applications.
"The biggest market has been single-family units, so this is for fibre to the home, to a single home," Zadoorian said. "We've had the smaller OptiNID units in our portfolio, alongside larger multi-dwelling unit applications that go up to 48 fibres. This bridges that gap in the middle, offering up to 24 fibres with certain connector types."
The enclosure can be used for both MDU and single-family unit applications, particularly where significant slack storage is required.
"A lot of people want 50 to 100 feet of slack. It accommodates all that whilst still maintaining a very compact footprint," Zadoorian added.
Flexible configuration with optional splice tray
The OPN MAX features optional accessories including a hinged splice tray and grounding plate, with multiple connector and cable entry configurations available.
"You can get it with grounding in it," Zadoorian explained. "You can also get a splice tray, which is the same one used across our other products: AFL's patented Apex splice tray. You can configure it with pigtails and splice into it. This will usually come from a closure or a splice closure: drop the cable in, bring it to the tray, splice it, and you get your 12 separate cables going to each subscriber, building, or condo."
The "MAX" designation reflects the product's position as the largest in the OptiNID family, targeting the growing MDU market whilst maintaining flexibility for various deployment scenarios.
Market response and target applications
Zadoorian noted that as MDUs continue to drive fibre growth, service providers need demarcation solutions that are compact, adaptable, and easy to install.
"The OPN MAX provides a single enclosure that supports multiple connector types, simplifies routing, and helps technicians turn up subscribers faster," he said.
Reflecting on initial feedback at Fiber Connect 2026, Zadoorian said the product has generated significant interest across multiple application types.
"It's been pretty good. There's a lot of general interest because it covers a lot of different applications, though MDU is definitely the largest one," Zadoorian said.
