EXFO revamps entire OTDR and iOLM product range

EXFO has overhauled its entire range of optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDR) for characterising fibre-optic cables. With 42 new and completely redesigned models, EXFO’s new C-series OTDRs offer improved specifications and extended performances to any networks, the company claims.

Now available on practically the entire product range, EXFO's Intelligent Optical Link Mapper (iOLM) application provides automated fault finding as well as accuracy and repeatability in fibre characterisation.

iLOOP function from EXFO reduces OTDR test time

The new intelligent loopback feature for EXFO’s intelligent Optical Link Mapper (iOLM) application is designed to simplify optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) testing by allowing two fibres to be characterised at once.

This doubles test efficiency, resulting in time spent on testing and analysis being slashed by at least 50 per cent, the company claims. Cutting fibre-testing time in half amounts to substantial opex savings - a key consideration for operators.

EXFO enhances CPRI test capabilities

EXFO has added an enhanced common public radio interface (CPRI) protocol test functionality to its all-in-one Ethernet/optical FTB-700G series and FTB-800 NetBlazer series of portable field testers.

This latest feature gives field technicians the capability to install and maintain mobile fronthaul networks by testing connectivity and data integrity between the remote radio head (RRH) and baseband unit (BBU) in new fibre-fed cell towers.

In order to meet the constantly increasing need for bandwidth, more and more telecommunications operators are now deploying 40G or 100G coherent systems on long-haul dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) networks. These new technologies are certainly beneficial, but they also bring about new test and measurement challenges, in particular for optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), versatile test instruments that are key to successful DWDM system commissioning and troubleshooting. Indeed, recent 40G/100G coherent systems featuring polarization multiplexing have made some traditional OSA measurements, such as optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), impossible to carry out. This white paper first establishes why an OSA is a fundamental test instrument in DWDM networks. Next, it identifies common OSA measurements being performed in the field, and then explains why a Pol-Mux OSA is required to perform OSNR measurements of 40G/100G coherent networks.
